Should I Choose Dental Implants or Dental Bridges?
2 Minute Read:
There are several reasons why people lose their teeth. These include, severe periodontal (gum) disease, severe tooth decay, facial trauma, health conditions like diabetes, and poor hygiene.
No matter how or why teeth are lost, replacing lost teeth is important for functionality and smile aesthetics. Fortunately, there are several ways to replace them, including dental implants and dental bridges.
Let’s look at them to help you decide which option may be a better fit for you.
What Are My Options?
Dental Implants
Dental implants are popular among men and women who have lost a single tooth, multiple adjacent teeth, or all of their teeth.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from titanium. These are inserted and fused to the jawbone and support permanent teeth.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are common when a person has lost one (or maybe two adjacent teeth).
Dental bridges restore the vacancy in the mouth by adding a false tooth that is connected to the teeth on either side. To place a bridge, the adjacent teeth must be shaved down so that the cap fits over.
Dental Bridges or Dental Implants: When and Why to Choose These Options
Both bridges and implants have their unique benefits. Fortunately, both are made to look as natural as possible.
Many choose dental bridges because:
- Bridges tend to be less expensive than implants and will normally be covered by insurance. Dental implants are not always covered by insurance and require minor surgery, making them a bit more costly.
- Bridges can be fitted in just two visits with your doctor, spanning only a couple of weeks, while implants may require three to six months to get the job done.
Many choose dental implants because
- Dental implants allow you to preserve the adjacent teeth, not having them ground down to fit a bridge.
- Dental implants also allow you to preserve / maintain your jaw bone. With bridges the bone is not stimulated and will resorb over time.
- Dental implants feel and function just like natural teeth. If performed individually, they can be flossed and maintained just like natural teeth.
- Bridges last about 10 to 15 years and are more difficult to clean as the teeth are connected which does not allow flossing
